NAPE Hosts Annual Women’s Conference

St. JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) will be putting off its Annual Women’s Conference at the Greenwood Inn and Suites in Corner Brook this weekend (September 18 – 20). Over 100 women activists, who are NAPE members from across the province, will be attending this weekend’s conference.

“This conference is about bringing women labour activists together to educate and share experiences about the myriad of issues they face in the workplace and our communities,” said NAPE President Jerry Earle. “Every year, the NAPE Women’s Committee organizes and puts off this important conference with the goal of building political capacity and activism in the union and the community.”

The 2015 NAPE Women’s Conference will feature workshops, guest speakers, and a panel covering a wide array of important women’s and labour issues.

This year, the NAPE Women’s Conference coincides with Sexual Violence Awareness Week in Newfoundland and Labrador which runs from September 14 – 18. This year’s theme is Building CommUNITY, which recognizes the urgent and ongoing need for collaborative action to end sexual violence in order to support safe, healthy communities.

“We must all work together in our society to ensure that women and girls are safe in their homes, schools, and workplaces,” said NAPE President Jerry Earle. “The labour movement has been at the forefront of the fight to end violence against women, for equality, for better pay and benefits, and better protections in the workplace and at home. It is a fight that we will continue for as long as it takes.”
