Dear brother/sister,

Please share this information with members at your respective local/workplace.

As you are aware, NAPE members voted 88% in favour of accepting the tentative agreement reached by NAPE with the provincial government and respective employers.

Since that time, we have been working with the employer to finalize the process. That involves finalizing the new agreements with the accepted changes, getting the teams together to review and proof the final agreements, and final sign off by both parties.

Review and Signing of Agreements

We are now scheduling teams to come in to do the latter part of this process. The first teams will start on March 2.

Once the agreements are signed off, we will digitize them and post them to our website. We will also send them out to the printers for those who prefer a hardcopy version. Hardcopy versions can be requested by contacting NAPE Headquarters by phone, email, or our website’s contact us feature.

In the coming weeks, the employers will be sending out info on how to request severance. The employer is responsible for the calculation, administration, and payout of severance.

It is the sole responsibility of the employer(s) to advise our members of the process that they will implement.

In general terms, a member who has one (1) or more years of continuous service in the employ of the Employer is entitled to be paid severance, or in the event of death to the employee’s estate, severance pay equal to the amount obtained by multiplying the number of completed years of continuous employment by his weekly salary to a maximum of twenty (20) weeks’ pay. Maternity leave and adoption leave up to fifty-two (52) weeks shall be counted as service for severance pay purposes.

The effective date of the severance article is March 31, 2018.

Members may elect which quarter of the 2018/19 fiscal year to receive their severance entitlement. Members shall notify the employer in writing and no later than April 30, 2018 which quarter they wish to receive their severance entitlement.

Members shall indicate if they wish to have all or a portion of their severance entitlement rolled into an RRSP. Where members fail to indicate this in their formal request, they shall be paid their full severance entitlement.

The rate of pay, service for severance entitlement, and position used shall be that on March 31, 2018.

Where a member is on layoff or an approved leave of absence, the position and rate of pay at the date of layoff or date of leave of absence shall be used.

Process Almost Completed

Thank you for your support and patience during this stage of the process. We have been working diligently to wrap this entire process up as quickly as possible. We are almost there.

In solidarity,
